ABSTRACT: The PRISMA project is part of a hierarchy of national research projects in Germany for investigating momentum, energy and mass fluxes in the North Sea ecosystem. Its specific objectives are the identification, analysis and formulation of the physical, chemical and biological processes controlling contaminant fluxes. The necessary mesoscale and small-scale data base was acquired through multi-ship experiments in the German Bight together with numerical models. The 6 accompanying articles are devoted to an integrated presentation of the results of a drift experiment in April 1991.
