Guidelines to Authors on Figure Preparation

1. General. Figures are a very important part of an article. They must be designed with great care and presented in the best possible quality. They should not take up excessive space, but must nonetheless remain clear and uncluttered. When planning figures, take into account the page size of the journal (print area is 169 x 225 mm, column width is 81 mm) and allow space for the legend; aim for either single-column width (81 mm) or full page width (169 mm). If several figures are of similar style, characteristics such as font type and size and line thickness should be kept consistent. In general, use the same font family (e.g. Helvetica or Arial) and overall style for all components in all figures of the manuscript. Graphs should be submitted at about double the intended final size. Lettering should be neither excessively small nor too large: a guideline size is that upper-case letters should be about 4 mm high, i.e. about 2 mm high after reduction to final printed size. Avoid very thin or very thick lines. Prints must be quite straight (i.e. not twisted, rotated, or otherwise distorted).

2. Line drawings and graphics should preferably be submitted as good-quality laser prints, bromides or ink drawings, at about double the intended final size, and/or as electronic files. Electronic files should always be supplied for line drawings containing grey/dot-screened or coloured areas, as these are difficult to reproduce satisfactorily from prints; this is especially important if the figure contains several different shades of grey. Preferred format is Adobe Illustrator; alternatives are eps, CorelDraw, .wmf; other formats may be accepted on request (techinfo@int-res.com).

3. Photographs (greyscale or colour) must be sent either as original prints of highest possible quality, and/or as electronic files. Electronic submission is preferred if the photos were originally generated electronically (e.g. by digital camera). Do not send scans. Prints may be mounted (accurately!) on paper or card if several photos are to be arranged together. Picture files should have a resolution of at least 300 dpi at final size. Preferred formats are Adobe Photoshop, tif(f), or eps; other formats may be accepted on request
(techinfo@int-res.com).

4. Cost of colour reproduction. Good quality colour illustrations are welcome, but authors must pay a contribution to the additional printing costs. A charge of 400 EUR for the first page and 150 EUR for subsequent pages is levied. Currently there is no charge for colour reproduction in Climate Research.

5. How to send files. Each figure should be provided as its own file, named according to its number and format (e.g. 'M1234fig2.eps'). Low quality scans, files in rare formats, and pictures from the Internet (e.g. .jpg) are unacceptable. For accepted articles, please do not embed graphics in MS Word etc. unless the figure is created there. Files should be included on the diskette(s), CD, or Zip disks sent with the revised manuscript or sent with the manuscript by email. Larger files may be uploaded to the Inter-Research ftp site (ftp.int-res.com). The ftp site can be freely accessed, but please inform us if you upload anything.
