EXCELLENCE IN ECOLOGY Book 6Science and LimnologyThe late Frank H. Rigler and Robert H. PetersRecipient of the International Ecology Institute (ECI) Prize 1991 in limnetic ecology Professor Robert H. Peters was elected by the ECI Jury chaired by Professor Jürgen Overbeck (Max-Planck-Institut für Limnologie, Plön, Germany) for his work on phosphorus cycling in lakes, which provides examples of excellent research and provides important insights into the measurement and availability of phosphorus in aquatic systems. Born in 1946 in Toronto, Canada, he obtained his Ph.D. in 1972 from the University of Toronto under the supervision of Frank H. Rigler, and he subsequently held postdoctoral fellowships in Italy, Austria and Germany. He has been a Professor at McGill University (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) since 1974. Book 6 reaches far into the realms of science history, philosophy and methodology, the significance of science for society, and the research and teaching in universities. Peters presents highlights of Rigler's unpublished notes and ideas and combines them masterfully with his own accomplishments and expertise. The book documents that ecologists have collected impressive amounts of observations and facts, but that they have failed to sufficiently identify and formulate theories which go beyond the facts — theories that can predict.
Excellence in Ecology books are sold at cost price. A considerable number of books are donated to libraries in Third World countries.
